Something has gone wrong. The game will not open, or it opens and your roster is not there, or it opens as somebody who is not you.
All three produce the same reaction — reinstall it, sign in again, try something — and that reaction is frequently the thing that turns a recoverable problem into a permanent one. This is the guide we would want somebody to read in the ninety seconds before they start pressing things.
Everything below assumes nothing about your account. If you have modded it, there is a section at the end specifically for that, because it changes what some of these signals mean.
First: which problem do you actually have
There are four categories and they are genuinely different. Match your symptom before you do anything.
| What you are seeing | Category | What it usually is | Do NOT do this first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Will not open, crashes, black screen | Client fault | The app on your device | Reinstall |
| Opens fine, progress is old or missing | Sync fault | Save state, not the account | Keep playing |
| Opens as a different or empty account | Identity fault | Which save is loaded | Start over |
| Cannot sign in at all | Credential fault | The recovery chain | Create a new account |
The right-hand column is the point of the table. Each of these problems has an instinctive response that makes it worse, and the instinctive responses are not interchangeable — the fix for one is the disaster for another.
Client faults: the game itself is broken
Crashes on launch, freezing, a black screen, hanging on the loading bar. Your account is almost certainly fine — this is the app, not the save.
Work through these in order, least destructive first. The order matters more than any individual step.
1. Force close and reopen. Genuinely fixes a large share of one-off failures and costs nothing.
2. Restart the device. The second-most-effective step and the second-most-skipped.
3. Check your storage. A device with almost no free space produces symptoms that look exactly like corruption — failed loads, crashes on save, hangs mid-fight. Free up a couple of gigabytes and try again before concluding anything is wrong with the game.
4. Check for an app update, and check whether one just happened. Both directions matter. Being behind can break connectivity; a fresh update can introduce a problem that a later patch fixes within days. If a problem started the same day an update landed, waiting is a real strategy.
5. Check your connection properly. Switch between mobile data and wi-fi rather than assuming. A partially-working connection causes stranger failures than no connection at all.
6. Only then consider reinstalling — and only after the WBID check above. On a linked account this is safe and often effective. On an unlinked one it is the end of your account.
Sync faults: the progress is wrong, not gone
You open the game and it is you, but it is you from three days ago. The character you promoted is unpromoted. The currency you spent is back.
This is frightening and it is usually the most recoverable of the four. The critical instruction is counter-intuitive:
Stop playing immediately.
The reflex is to keep going and hope it corrects. Do not. If the game is running on a stale local state and you continue playing, you risk that stale state becoming the committed one — you can overwrite the good save with the old one by playing on top of it. The progress was not lost when you opened the game. It gets lost when you build on the wrong version.
Instead: close the game fully, confirm you have a solid connection, and reopen. If the correct state returns, force one clean save by playing briefly and closing properly rather than force-quitting.
Two habits that prevent most sync faults entirely:
- Do not play on two devices. This includes a phone and an emulator at the same time. Two sessions on one account is the single most reliable way to produce a conflicting save, and it is also why any legitimate service will ask you to stay logged out while work is being done on your account.
- Close the game properly rather than force-quitting mid-session, particularly after something significant like a promotion or a large purchase.
Identity faults: this is not my account
You are looking at a fresh tutorial, or somebody else's roster, or an account that is recognisably yours but far behind.
This is not a loss. It is the wrong save being loaded, and there are usually only two causes: you are looking at a local or guest save rather than your linked one, or you are signed into a different WBID than the one your progress is attached to.
Do not start over. Do not clear app data. Do not "fix" it by playing. Every one of those actions operates on the save you can see, and the save you want is somewhere else. People destroy recoverable accounts at exactly this moment, because a tutorial screen feels like proof the account is gone.
Sign out, then sign in deliberately with the WBID you believe holds the progress. If you are unsure which email that is, work that out before touching anything else — the WBID guide explains why the email is the top of the chain and everything else hangs from it.
Credential faults: you cannot sign in
The account exists, you simply cannot reach it. This is the recovery chain doing its job, and the fix runs top-down: the email account, then the WBID, then the game.
If you still control the email, this resolves. If you do not, that is the genuinely difficult case, and it is worth being honest that it is often where the story ends. This is the whole reason the WBID guide makes such a point of using an address you will still control in five years — the advice is boring right up to the day it is the only thing that matters.
What is genuinely unrecoverable
We would rather say this plainly than let you spend a week hoping.
An unlinked save on a device you no longer have. There is no identity for support to match you against. This is the single most common permanent loss in this game and it is entirely preventable in about sixty seconds, which is what makes it so frustrating.
An unlinked save that was reinstalled. Same reason, self-inflicted, and it is why the reinstall trap above is the first thing in this guide.
An email account you have lost control of, with no secondary recovery. The chain is broken at the top.
If you are in one of these, the useful move is to start again properly — link immediately, use a recoverable address — rather than to spend weeks in support queues. And read the returning player guide rather than the beginner one, because your knowledge is intact even if your roster is not.
Escalating to support
Worth doing, worth having realistic expectations about.
Have ready: your in-game player name and ID, the linked email address, the approximate date you last played successfully, your device and OS, and any record of purchases — purchase receipts are the strongest evidence of ownership available to you, because they are verifiable outside the game.
Understand what they can do: match a save to an identity, and investigate faults on their side.
Understand what they cannot do: conjure an identity that never existed. Support is not withholding your account out of unhelpfulness when a save was never linked. There is nothing on their side connecting that progress to you.
Be precise and calm. Symptom, date, what you have already tried, what you have not. A clear report gets a better outcome than an urgent one.
If you have been modding, read this part
This is the intersection nobody writes about, and it is the reason this guide exists on this site rather than a general one.
Do not panic-reinstall a modded account. Everything in the reinstall trap applies with extra force, because the instinct after anything odd happens on a modded account is to assume the worst and start wiping. Confirm the link first, every time.
Learn to tell a fault from a penalty, because they feel identical in the first hour and call for opposite responses.
| Signal | Looks more like a fault | Looks more like a penalty |
|---|---|---|
| Others report the same thing today | Yes | No |
| Started right after a game update | Yes | No |
| Specific resources reduced or reverted | No | Yes |
| Sign-in refused with an explicit message | No | Yes |
| Other games and apps also struggling | Yes | No |
| Resolves after a restart or a day | Yes | No |
And the honest part: if the outcome is a penalty rather than a bug, support is not a recourse, because the thing you would be raising is itself the terms-of-service violation. That is not a trick or a loophole — it is the actual position, and it is why are Injustice mods safe? lands where it does: do not mod an account you could not stand to lose. The recovery guidance on this page protects you from accidents. It does not protect you from enforcement, and nothing does.
The five-minute prevention pass
Do this today, while nothing is wrong. It is the entire point of the guide.
- Confirm the account is linked to a WBID, and that you know which email.
- Sign into that email. Actually open it. An address you cannot access is not a recovery route.
- Check the email's own recovery options — phone number, secondary address — and update anything stale.
- Note your player ID somewhere outside the game.
- Keep purchase records. They are the strongest ownership evidence you will ever have.
Five minutes, once. It converts most of the permanent outcomes on this page into inconveniences.
The short version
- Four different problems: client, sync, identity, credential. Identify before acting.
- Reinstalling is the instinctive first move and the one that makes unlinked loss permanent.
- Old or missing progress means stop playing — building on a stale state is how the good save gets overwritten.
- A tutorial screen is usually the wrong save loaded, not a deleted account. Never start over to fix it.
- Never play the same account on two devices.
- Unlinked plus device gone is the one genuinely unrecoverable case, and it takes a minute to prevent.
- If you mod, learn the fault-versus-penalty tells, and know that support is not a route for the second one.
