Gear is the half of Injustice: Gods Among Us Mobile that quietly decides whether your roster performs, and it is the half most players under-invest in. Characters are visible and exciting. Gear is a menu.
This guide is the opposite of exciting: step-by-step instructions for what gear goes where, why breakpoints matter more than star ratings, and how to assemble a working setup without guessing.
The equipment system in six facts
Before the recommendations, six mechanics facts that determine everything that follows.
Each character can equip up to three pieces. The first slot unlocks free at character level 5. The second slot costs 20,000 Power Credits. The third costs 40,000 Power Credits. Both slot unlocks are one-time costs per character — you pay once, and the slot stays open forever.
Gear has a rarity tier — Common, Uncommon, Rare, Epic, Legendary. Evolution takes an Epic piece to Legendary, and an Epic piece to Legendary. Each evolution adds one star and unlocks additional effects. A maxed Legendary piece is meaningfully stronger than a base Legendary, and the gap is wider than most players expect.
Gear has a gear score from 3 to 150. The total possible gear score per character is 450 across three pieces. This number affects nothing in multiplayer match-ups — it is a rough summary, not a power rating.
Breakpoints exist. Upgrades do not improve stats smoothly. The meaningful stat jumps land at specific thresholds. Being one upgrade short of a threshold is functionally close to not having upgraded at all.
Same piece cannot be equipped on multiple characters. Each piece is unique. If you have two characters who both want Tantu Totem, you need two copies — there is no sharing.
Gear can be removed at any time without cost. Swapping gear between characters is free. This is the mechanism that makes mode-specific gearing possible — you can put Astro Harness on your Survivor lead and then swap it to your Online Battle anchor without penalty.
The full system is covered in the gear shards guide. The instructions below are what to actually do with it.
The five pieces that define the meta
Every competitive setup in 2026 uses some combination of these five pieces. Everything else is supplementation. If you are missing two or more of these, your gear is the problem, regardless of character quality.
1. Tantu Totem
A 5-star Utility piece available from Online Battle season rewards, Nth Metal packs, and certain bundles. Its effects:
- 20-30% crit chance on Special Attacks
- 15-35% power on tag-in
- 50-100% power refund if a Special KO's an opponent or deals no damage
- Evolved: full power refund if the Special dealt no damage, enabling SP recycling
Tantu Totem is the single most valuable gear piece in the game because it converts KOs into continued momentum. In Online Battle, it lets a character start every fight with a special ready and recycle power through the opposing team. In Survivor Mode, the tag-in power means you never waste a turn.
Who gets it: any character whose game plan revolves around Special Attacks. Flashpoint Batman, Deathstroke, and Raven are the priority targets, but it is genuinely useful on any SP-dependent character.
2. Astro Harness
A 5-star Defence piece available from the same sources as Tantu Totem. Its effects:
- Electric DOT on any Special Attack (5% of SP damage for 5 seconds)
- Power Shield: absorbs damage up to 20-40% of max health on a lethal hit
- Evolved: invulnerability at 100%, 50%, and 10% health thresholds
Astro Harness is the ultimate defensive gear. In Survivor Mode, the three invulnerability windows are effectively extra lives across a 15-fight run. In Online Battle, the Power Shield and invulnerability let you survive opening bursts.
Who gets it: tanks and supports. Characters whose value is staying alive to enable teammates. Hawkgirl (Blackest Night) and Blackest Night Aquaman are strong candidates.
3. Master's Death Cart
A 5-star Offence piece available from Online Battle season rewards and Nth Metal packs. Its effects:
- Unblockable damage on tag-in (5-15% area damage to the opponent's team)
- Light attack combo applies area damage
- Evolved: 80-100% chance of 10-20% unblockable damage on tag-in
Master's Death Cart converts the most common action in any fight — swapping characters — into guaranteed damage. It pressures the opponent to avoid tagging, which limits their options.
Who gets it: characters who tag in frequently. Deadshot/Arkham Origins, Deathstroke, and any team that relies on rotation benefits.
4. The Ibistick
A 5-star Offensive piece available from Online Battle and Nth Metal packs. Its effects:
- 20-35% Special Attack damage increase
- DOT damage applied on Special Attacks
- Evolved: DOT damage increased by 50-100%
The Ibistick is the DOT amplifier. Any character whose game plan involves damage-over-time — Aquaman, Poison Ivy, Scarecrow — should have this gear. The DOT stacking is what makes hazard-based teams viable in longer fights.
Who gets it: DOT characters and characters who apply on-hit effects through specials.
5. Quake Engine
A 5-star Utility piece available from Online Battle and survival rewards. Its effects:
- Extends the duration of DOT effects on the opponent
- If the wearer is knocked out, the DOT on the opponent spreads to the next character
- Evolved: additional effects on DOT spreading
Quake Engine turns single-target DOT into team-wide damage. A bleed applied by Flashpoint Aquaman with Quake Engine equipped spreads to the next opponent when the first one is knocked out, making DOT teams self-propagating.
Who gets it: any character applying DOT. Aquaman, Ivy, and Harley Quinn are common candidates.
Gear setup by role
Damage dealers
Damage dealers need gear that amplifies their output. The core three categories are basic attack damage, crit chance/damage, and special attack damage.
Basic attack damage gear:
- Promethium Longsword — Batman signature, basic damage and crit chance
- Blade of the War God — basic damage, crit chance, and life drain
- Overpowered 5-U-93-R — basic damage with life drain on combo ender
- Netherrealm Kama — basic damage and crit chance
Crit amplification gear:
- LexCorp Helmet V2 — crit damage boost (team-wide)
- LexCorp Chest Armor V2 — crit chance (team-wide)
- Cloak of Destiny — crit damage amplification
Special attack gear:
- Tantu Totem — power refund and crit chance on specials
- The Ibistick — DOT and special damage increase
- Mother Box — power generation and special damage
The standard damage dealer setup is: one basic attack gear, one crit amplification gear, one special attack gear. This covers all three damage pathways.
Tanks and supports
Tanks need gear that keeps them alive so their passives can fire. Supports need gear that amplifies their team effects.
Defensive gear:
- Astro Harness — invulnerability and power shield
- LexCorp Gauntlets V2 — health and defense
- Heart of Darkness — damage reduction and DOT
- Gingold Soda — damage reduction and crit resistance
Support amplification gear:
- Fourth World Godly Chest Plate — team health and power generation
- League of Assassins Adept Hood — team crit chance and damage
- Batman Ninja Helmet — Batman Ninja team power on block
The standard tank setup is: one defensive gear, one support amplification gear, one utility gear. Astro Harness is almost always slot one for a tank.
Mode-specific adjustments
Survivor Mode: Prioritise Astro Harness and DOT extension gear. Quake Engine, The Ibistick, and characters with self-heal (Gauntlets of Azrael) extend runs.
Online Battle: Prioritise Tantu Totem and power-on-tag-in gear. The ability to start fights with a special ready is more valuable than raw damage output.
Campaign farming: Prioritise clearing speed over sustain. Basic attack gear and crit amplification reduce fight duration, which increases XP and credit income per hour.
Step-by-step: building a gear setup
This is the process most players skip, and it is the process that separates finished teams from partial ones.
Step 1: Identify the role
Before looking at gear, decide what job this character does on your team. Is it the damage dealer? The tank? The support? The answer determines the gear category priority.
If you are unsure, use the team composition guide to identify which role this character fills in your specific team.
Step 2: Unlock the slots
The first gear slot is free at level 5. The second and third cost 20,000 and 40,000 Power Credits respectively. If the character is not going to be on your working team, do not spend the credits on slots — the slots are per-character, and a slot on a benched character is wasted money.
Step 3: Choose the base pieces
Start with the pieces you already have that match the role. Do not chase a specific piece if you do not have it — a lower-star piece that fills the role is more valuable than an unfinished higher-star piece.
If you do not have the right pieces, check the Injustice shop for current availability, or look at Injustice mods for targeted shard delivery.
Step 4: Fuse to threshold
This is the breakpoint step. Before spending shards, identify which threshold you are aiming at. Each fusion level increases stats, but the meaningful jumps happen at specific points — usually every 5 or 10 levels depending on the piece.
Do not spread shards across multiple pieces. A piece at threshold outclasses three pieces halfway to the same threshold, because the threshold is where the bonus effect unlocks.
Step 5: Evolve if available
Evolution takes an Epic piece to Legendary and unlocks the second effect. The evolution cost is significant — both shards and Power Credits — so only evolve pieces that are already at or near maximum level. An evolved piece at level 0 is weaker than an unevolved piece at level 10.
Step 6: Match to the mode
After the piece is at threshold and evolved, confirm it matches the mode you play. If you built Astro Harness for Online Battle but mostly play Survivor Mode, the invulnerability thresholds are less useful because fights last longer and the invulnerability windows get used up earlier.
The ability to swap gear between modes without cost means you can build for one mode and swap pieces as needed. But you can only swap pieces you actually own, so the first priority is always the mode you spend the most time in.
Common setup mistakes
| Mistake | Why it costs you |
|---|---|
| Upgrading inventory gear | Power Credits spent on equipment nothing fields |
| Spreading upgrades thin | Nothing reaches a breakpoint, so nothing improves |
| Chasing shard colours you cannot use | Shards for pieces you have no route to are dead weight |
| Selling duplicates too eagerly | Reacquiring costs more than holding; be sure they are surplus |
| Rerolling gear on benched characters | Premium currency spent to improve something unused |
| Putting the wrong gear on the wrong role | A crit-boosting piece on a tank is wasted potential |
| Evolving before levelling | An evolved piece at level 0 is weaker than unevolved at level 10 |
| Building gear you cannot acquire | Spending resources planning around a piece that is not currently available |
The last one is subtle and expensive. Planning a setup around Tantu Totem when you do not have it and cannot acquire it means you have invested in a plan rather than a team. Build what you have, not what you want to have.
How to acquire gear
Gameplay sources
- Online Battle season rewards — Top 5% of a season rewards specific legendary gear pieces. Each season rotates which piece is available.
- Survivor Mode — Gear sets drop from deep runs (waves 10+). The Fourth World, League of Assassins, and LexCorp sets are exclusive to Survivor.
- Challenge Mode — Some gear pieces are Challenge exclusive rewards.
- Nth Metal packs — Both Pro and Ultimate packs contain gear, with Ultimate packs having higher chances at legendary pieces.
Store sources
The Injustice shop occasionally offers gear packs and bundles. The Gear Locker (three random pieces for 65,000 credits) is generally not worth it — the randomness and low legendary rate make it expensive compared to targeted acquisition.
Targeted acquisition
If you need a specific piece to complete a breakpoint, Injustice mods can deliver specific gear shards to your account. This is cheaper and faster than waiting for the right season or pack RNG, and it does not require installing anything on your device.
The short version
- Unlock all three gear slots on your working characters before spending on gear itself.
- Five pieces define the meta: Tantu Totem, Astro Harness, Master's Death Cart, The Ibistick, Quake Engine.
- Damage dealers get basic damage + crit amplification + special attack gear.
- Tanks get defensive gear + support amplification + utility gear.
- Breakpoints matter more than star ratings. Finish one piece before starting the next.
- Match gear to the mode you actually play, not the mode you aspire to.
- Swapping gear is free. Owning the right pieces is not.
